Ye, also known as Kanye West, is stirring things up once more with his most recent footwear design. The recent introduction of his YZY POD footwear has generated considerable disapproval, with admirers pointing out the shoe’s exоrbitant cost and its startling similarity to socks.
“YZY POD” is the “foldable future of footwear,” according to a social media announcement by Kanye West. The product is available for pre-order for $200, and he urges followers to “accept no imitations.” But this audacious action was met with severe criticism from his followers.
One user remarked, “YE, $200 for a single sock is absurd,” while others jeeredly questioned whether the price perked was for a pair or a single sock.
Someone else wrote, “Who is paying [$200] for a pair of socks?”
The “foldable” shoes offered by West were criticized for their unconventional scaling, which included sizes 1, 2, and 3. This confused customers, who sought clarification on how these sizes correlated with standard measurements.
A devotee inquired, “What does size 1 2 3 meаn?” Another internet user tweeted, “I was planning on ordering a pair but need to understand how the measurements function. “Brunch, please break it down.”
Amid the frenzy surrounding pricing and sizing, West representatives maintained a tight-lipped stance and refrained from responding to the accumulating inquiries and criticisms.
Kenneth Anand, a Sneaker Law professor and former YEEZY attorney, defended West’s pricing strategy in an interview with Page Six, citing the expenses associated with producing high-quality independent brand products. Anand hypothesized that the pricing strategy employed by West may be more rational in comparison to comparable products offered by luxury brands such as Vetements and Balenciaga, which are priced considerably higher at retail.
“People who are criticizing the price on the Yeezy sock shoes may not understand the high cost of making quality products, especially for independent brands,” said Kenneth Anand.
“By comparison, luxury brands Vetements and Balenciaga are both selling extremely similar, if not identical, sock shoes; the Yeezy models are cheaper by about $400 or more, so arguably Kanye could have raised his price.”
Since Adidas terminated West’s contract in October 2022 on account of his antisemitic remarks, this is his first product launch. “Adidas strictly prohibits antisemitic and other forms of hate speech” stated the athletic manufacturer at the time. “Ye’s recent comments and actions have been unacceptable, hateful and dangerous, and they viоlate the company’s values of diversity and inclusion, mutual respect and fairness.”
