Skepta has been compared to Kanye West since the cover of his new single came out, and it’s not a good thing.
The UK artist who earlier this month announced a new album and its lead track “Gas Me Up (Diligent)” also shared the artwork for the new song for the first time on Instagram on Monday (January 8). From the back, the picture shows several people with shaved heads. One of them has the words “Gas Me Up” written on their head.
Right away, people compared the picture to The Holocaust, which brought up Kanye’s anti-Semitic words from the past.
One guy asked, “What the Kanye is going on?” “It always amazes me how many people these kinds of things have to go through and no one noticed?! Smh.”
Another person said, “This makes me think of Jewish prisoners in a concentration camp who had their heads shaved and had the words “Gas Me Up” tattooed on the back of their head.” This is one of the most insulting and disgusting works of art ever made. How embarrassing.”
“Nah skepta don’t do this to your legacy,” wrote someone else. Do not go out like Kanye. Smh.”
Skepta said he would stop singing in 2021 after putting out five new albums, the last of which was 2019’s Ignorance Is Bliss.
He dropped a five-song EP called All In and said it would be his last along with his retirement news. But at the beginning of 2024, he said that he would be coming out of early retirement when his sixth record, Knιfe and Fork, came out.
“It’s been years since my last album came out, and I want to thank you all for the love while I was away,” he wrote in the message. “I’m so glad that my music is still moving people, even though I’m not here because I’ve seen the messages, tweets, and TikToks.”
He went on, “I’m excited to sаy that my next studio album, #KnifeAndFork, is coming out this year. The first single, #GasMeUp (Diligent), will be out on January 26th.” I can’t wait to see everyone at @bigsmokefestival in 2024.
As of this writing, the rapper has not said anything about the issue.
