At the 64th Grammy Awards, Kanye West took home his first two prizes of the evening. The Weeknd and Lil Baby’s song “Hurricane” won Best Melodic Rap Performance, and JAY-Z and The Weeknd’s song “Jail” won Best Rap Song. West’s 2021 album Donda include both of these tracks.
“Hurricane” triumphed against “Pride Is the Ԁevil” (J. Cole and Lil Baby), “Need to Know” (Doja Cat), “Industry Baby” (Lil Nas X with Jack Harlow), and “WUSYANAME” (Tyler, The Creator featuring YoungBoy Never Broke Again and Ty Dolla $ign) in the Best Melodic Rap Performance category.
The victory for “Hurricane” is particularly noteworthy because one of the featured musicians on the song, whose breakthrough album After Hours did not receive a single nomination, vowed never to submit his work to the Grammys again.
Album of the Year is among the five Grammys for which Donda is nominated. Tyler, the creator of Call Me If You Get Lost, won one of its nominations for Best Rap Album.
