Coldplay lowered their carbon emissions by 59% in the first two years of their eco-friendly Music of the Spheres world tour.
The band declared in 2021 that they will reduce their carbon emissions by at least 50% to make tours eco-friendly and have a plan.
A dancefloor that generated electricity when fans danced, exercise bicycles to power shows, bamboo sets, solar panels, minimizing air travel, and planting a tree for every ticket sold were part of the concept.
The band planted seven million trees and diverted 72% of tour garbage for reuse, recycling, and composting, according to their last update.
In-venue solar panels, kinetic dancefloors, and power bikes produced 15 to 17 KwH every show, enough to power one of the smaller stage sections and give personnel with phone, laptop, and tool-charging stations.
Coldplay funded and installed two solar-powered “ocean cleanup river interceptors” to remove garbage from the ocean.
The band claims the data were validated by the MIT environmental solutions initiative.
According to the band, the first two years of this tour have resulted in 59% lower direct CO2 emissions than their 2016-17 stadium tour, show-by-show.The MIT Environmental Solutions Initiative verified these numbers.
“Thank you to our amazing touring family and all the brilliant people who made this possible. We appreciate all who have attended shows, charged batteries on power bikes and dance floors, arrived by foot, bike, ride share, or public transport, brought refillable water bottles, returned LED wristbands for recycling, and purchased tickets, which have planted over seven million trees. As a band and industry, we are far from where we should be. But we’re appreciative for everyone’s cooperation so far and commend those working to improve things.”
The band reduced carbon emissions by 47% in July 2023, according to its earlier report.
