Throughout her remarkable 35-year career, model and new mother Naomi Campbell has shattered barriers, gracing runways and appearing on countless magazine covers. Despite her demanding schedule, her work continually fuels her passion and brings her immense joy.
However, even legends need time to unwind. When Campbell needs to truly relax, she retreats to her villa in Malindi, a serene coastal village in Kenya. For over 20 years, this stunning home overlooking the Indian Ocean has served as her main sanctuary, offering a tranquil escape from the fast-paced life she’s led in New York and her hometown of London. It perfectly embodies the essence of indoor-outdoor living.
The spacious villa is adorned in warm earth tones and bathed in natural light, reflecting a sense of casual luxury. “It’s a very peaceful place,” Campbell notes. In fact, she advises against phone calls and television—opting instead to unwind with a good book. The soothing sound of crickets and the profound silence are what truly help her relax.
Campbell is particularly fond of the makuti thatched roofs and the soaring cathedral ceilings made from dried coconut leaves. These makuti roofs, she explains, have been a traditional building material in East Africa for thousands of years, crafted by hand using a meticulous layering technique.
“We’ve had it for at least 12 years, and it’s still in great condition,” she proudly shares. Despite the harsh elements of air, wind, and sea salt that can quickly cause deterioration, the roof has held up remarkably well—a testament to its craftsmanship and artistic value.
Campbell doesn’t have to look far for exquisite woodwork, either. “Much of the wooden furniture in our home is crafted right here in Malindi,” she says. In fact, there’s a workshop located at the back of the house where these pieces are made.
